44 LOUIS VUITTON'S NEW WOMAN AND THE SIGH OF RELIEF HEARD 'ROUND THE WORLD. M uch relief was felt by the fashion world when Nicolas Ghesquière re-signed his contract as artistic director of women's collections for Louis Vuitton, for few can translate French design sensibility as deftly. He took the reins at Vuitton in 2013 as the fashion house's artistic director — a perfect appointment following his 15-year tenure at the helm of Balenciaga. With renewed commitment, he surpassed even himself with his Fall/Winter 2018 collection staged at the Musée du Louvre's cour Lefuel — a most opulent stable with horse ramps built for Napoleon III. The show was a sensation, not just for its spaceship-like set, but for the ultra-modern approach to sportswear that came down the runway. The collection transcends time and exists neither too much in the past, nor too far in the future. It's the now frontier. BY CHRISTINA GEYER. PHOTOGRAPHY COLLIER SCHORR. STYLED BY MARIE-AMÉLIE SAUVÉ.
