85 the master bathroom, enveloping the floors and walls in highly textural veined marble. The custom tub, carved from a massive cube of Belgian bluestone marble, is a complex feat of craftsmanship that blends with the surrounding materials. "The room is simply executed, but quite flamboyant with expressive stone," Hunter says. And it's exactly the thing Frank would have appreciated. A Craftsman-era bungalow across from Menil Park serves as the design studios for Michael Landrum and Garrett Hunter. The Philip Johnson-designed Menil House in particular is an ongoing source of inspiration, with its global mix of art and furniture, including fanciful furnishings created by couturier Charles James, who designed the interiors of the house. For the living room of the River Oaks project, Hunter installed one of James' most delicious designs — and Hunter's favorite: a felt sofa that is a riff on Man Ray's floating lips painting. The space is sparingly fitted with exotic references that James would have adored, such as a trio of 19th- century Syrian inlay tabourets, a collection of African and Olmec heads, a 19th-century silk Kerman rug, a Chinese Art Deco screen, a 1929 Man Ray photograph, and a Pier Giuseppe Ramella floor lamp from the 1980s. It also includes some of Hunter's most prized discoveries: a pair of original Pierre Jeanneret chairs that came from one of Corbusier's projects and a first-edition, circa-2010 Olivier Gregoire armchair in resin and Fiberglas that elegantly unfolds like origami. The narrative throughout is one of restraint, with each piece carefully considered and given breathing room. In the entrance hall, an antique Venetian grotto tête-à-tête captures attention with its carved gilt frame, and in the stairwell niche, a somber Julian Schnabel work sets off the curves of a gleaming bronze torso by Aristide Maillol.
