letter publisher 24 MISAEL RODRIGUEZ W hen we started putting together our April issue, we had no idea what the coming weeks would bring. April is always one of my favorite months, not only because of the warmer temps, but because the city comes together to celebrate the arts in such an amazing, diverse way. As I write this letter, in the wake of the challenges brought about due to COVID-19, many schools have closed, and events have been canceled or postponed. Museums are closing their doors, and businesses everywhere are offering discounted shipping and limited in-store hours. There's no doubt there will be economic impact on the people and organizations we know and love — but as an optimist, I find myself thinking of all we can do to help our community. Supporting nonprofits has always been a huge part of the fabric of PaperCity. For more than 20 years, we have covered galas and luncheons, private fundraisers and large-scale events that raise critical funds for organizations throughout our city. What we sometimes don't see behind the glittering gowns are the countless volunteers and businesses that work together to make each event a success. While we can't purchase tickets or attend some of our favorite spring events, we can still help. We can continue to donate to these organizations — and it's more important now to do so. As of press time, many of our April charitable partners are cancelling or postponing their largest events, from Community Partners of Dallas to the Dallas Art Fair and the Nasher Prize, the Children's Cancer Fund, Dallas Contemporary, and the Dallas Museum of Art. Many, many more organizations have had to temporarily close their doors or provide additional assistance to those in need during this time. Let's stand together to support our local community — the nonprofits and the small businesses. For updates on how to help, click papercitymag.com. Meanwhile, we all hope this April issue provides a welcome escape from the world news, and that we are able to enjoy the sunshine and community together in a few short weeks. Stay positive and healthy this spring! Brooke Dowdy Dallas Publisher brooke@papercitymag.com
