38 A JEWEL OF A BALL BY BILLY FONG PHOTOGRAPHY STEVE WRUBEL I t was called One Enchanted Evening, and this year's Jewel Charity Ball left me wide- eyed remembering the twinkling decor and the nearly 1,500 guests who fi lled Dickies Arena in Fort Worth. In its 66th incarnation — and in a new venue — the annual event was co-chaired by Anne Paup and Sally Prater. And it was ravishing on every level. Visionary designer Bill Robertson transformed the vast space, which had housed the rodeo just a few weeks prior, into a fl ora and fauna wonderland and glamorous ballroom. During cocktails, guests slinked onto chic lounges to catch up and sip bubbles or circulated and shopped. The ball's offi cial jeweler, Bachendorf's, stocked case upon case with sparkling baubles and donated a percentage of the purchase price of each jewel that went home with guests. Among the temptations were a wide sapphire bracelet totaling almost 71 carats and a 63-plus-carat aquamarine and sapphire necklace, which Jewel Charity Ball volunteer president Lou Martin wore for the night.
