K n o w n f o r h e r n e o - traditionalist a p p r o a c h , N e w Yo r k City designer Ashley Whittaker says she's drawn to textiles with texture. "You can't decorate an entire room out of printed linens," she says. Her new book, The Well-Loved House: Creating Homes with Color, Comfort, and Drama (Rizzoli), reveals the charming, exquisite interiors of client properties ranging from a 1920s home in Greenwich, Connecticut, to a Florida townhouse, and offers a rare glimpse into Whittaker's own residence in Millbrook, New York — a pattern-filled dream featuring gorgeous navy faux-bois wallpaper and a bedroom swathed in fabric custom block-printed in India. Trained by legendary decorator Markham Roberts, Whittaker is a member of the Elle Decor A-List and has been featured in Veranda, The New York Times, Architectural Digest, and House Beautiful. Fall wall color. Churlish Green by Farrow & Ball. Favorite white paint. Seapearl by Benjamin Moore. Vintage design books that all design lovers must have in their library. Billy Baldwin Decorates, David Hicks on Decoration, and — he will kill me for calling it vintage — Jeffrey Bilhuber's first book, Jeffrey Bilhuber's Design Basics. Read them all, cover to cover. Favorite candle scent. Unscented candles only, please. Movie with inspirational interiors. Out of Africa had a profound effect on me as a teenager. From the comfortable British Colonial-style interiors, period chairs strewn throughout, and bookcases in every room to the starched white tablecloths and silver at every meal, the rooms had a relaxed elegance about them that was collected yet unpretentious. What you're looking forward to seeing in Dallas. I don't know about seeing, so much as tasting Texas barbecue. Is there anything better? Ashley Whittaker will speak and sign her book Tuesday, September 21, 10 am to noon, at Schumacher, as part of Texas Design Week Dallas. TXDW is a ticketed event; for tickets and complete schedule, go to texasdesignweek.com.
