D ouglas Friedman — w h o s e I n s t a g r a m handle is The Facinator — has p h o t o g r a p h e d s o m e o f t h e world's most interesting people: Hillary Clinton laughing on the cover of New York magazine; Nate Berkus, déshabillé, slicing limes in his kitchen; Mark Anthony slouched in a soaking-wet T-shirt, taking a drag off a cigarette. Friedman may be known for his outsized talent photographing interiors and people — but his '70s sexy mustache and muscular tattoos are a close second — and he's often written about by the same publications for which he shoots. His interiors photography catapulted him into the stratosphere (see pages 146 through 155 for an Emily Summers project he photographed), and he's a frequent contributor to interiors magazines around the world, including Architectural Digest, which published Friedman Ranch, his ranch in Marfa. He previously split time between homes in NYC and L.A. and, after discovering Marfa nine years ago, moved there full time. Located at the end of a two- mile road on the outskirts of town, the contemporary house is his own design, which he sketched on napkins. Friedman has given the interiors a worldly vibe, with pieces by Amsterdam designer Lex Pott, Steven Gambrel, Isamu Noguchi; and he's mined the region for furnishings, such as stools by Lumber Club Marfa, a Donald Judd chair, and Garza Marfa textiles.
