The space race — and the respect for science it engendered — influenced American culture in myriad ways, especially design. Sherle W a g n e r introduced his M o l e c u l e Collection in the '60s, with knobs designed to resemble the cluster of atoms that make up a molecule. It's been in production ever since, evolving with nearly 20 additional finishes and 14 gemstone options — a new satin-brass finish has just come out. Wagner founded his namesake company with his wife, Rose, in 1945, elevating often-overlooked bath hardware and accessories with playful designs and elegant WHAT A BLAST finishes. His first offering — a dolphin faucet finished in 24K gold — was perfect for a clientele that included presidents and movie stars. Marissa Geoffroy, Wagner's granddaughter and creative director of the company today, describes him as an intellectual with a vast curiosity for the arts and sciences. "He delighted in things like cells and stars, along with manmade phenomena like spacecraft," she says. Sherle Wagner, Dallas Design District, 1025 Slocum St., sherlewagner.com. Rebecca Sherman MASTERPIECE THEATER S chumacher has enlisted master artisans to make its exciting new Masterpieces collection of rare fabrics and wallcoverings, which are being produced in extremely limited quantities. Royal Silk Embroidery — the collection's debut design — was inspired by an intricately embellished gown festooned with mythical sea creatures and exotic flora and birds, worn by Queen Elizabeth I and captured on canvas in the 16th-century by artist Nicholas Hilliard. It takes a team of 25 artisans, including embroiderers and weavers, 30 weeks to make 100 yards of the coveted fabric, utilizing dying ancient techniques.
