By Steven Hempel F ashion is about making statements. It's emotion, luxury, and exhilaration — a world where the message is the final result. Its participants operate in a minefield disguised as a garden of Eden, a place of luxury with all the trappings and many traps. In a less- than-ironic twist, Balenciaga launched its Resort 2023 collection at the New York Stock Exchange. Thirty-three pieces from the new collaboration with Adidas made their way in front of the viewing public. Covered head to toe in full latex bodysuits, it was the work of Demna, Balenciaga's director and a man who uses visual expression as the ultimate messaging, forgoing words and the need to verbalize for striking imagery. He's a man of few words, so we'll follow suit with a few of our own. Subversive. Raw. Intense. This was the look and the vibe of a show where high fashion marries street fashion, merging Adidas' iconic triple stripe with Balenciaga's oversized tees and sweats. Forget words.
