Before EIC … Is it fair to say my entire adult life has revolved around PaperCity? A slight exaggeration, maybe, but I grew up at the magazine. My tenure as editor in chief was my second stint. I started my career at the magazine in 2008 as an intern during my collegiate years at SMU. I signed on as assistant editor in the summer of 2009, reporting to then-editors, Brooke Hortenstine and Rob Brinkley. Prior to becoming editor in chief in 2015, I was managing editor of FD Luxe and worked as editorial director for a small digital media start-up. To say I was thrilled to come home and lead the magazine that was so foundational in my early career is an understatement. Usual day. I think we all had a little bit of a love-hate relationship with 3303 Lee Parkway: a mid- century marvel with all the quirks that come with that. To me, the PaperCity office really unfolds throughout the city of Dallas. Our work took us all over town, all day long. That said, a typical day consisted of the ongoing battle of trying to make a dent in my email, write copy, edit copy, team meetings, and all those aforementioned parties. State of your desk. Like all the editors that came before me, I upgraded to the large wooden desk made CHRISTINA GEYER, THE MILLENNIAL (2015 to 2019) famous by Rob Brinkley and the towering stacks of papers, mail, books, and event invitations that covered every square inch. I kept a tidier workspace — with a few key coffee-table books (all with the subject matter of Diana Vreeland, my editor idol), my old-school datebook (I still keep a written calendar), a notebook and oversized jotter pad for keeping endless to- do lists, and a large stack of runsheets to keep track of the many stories we had in the pipeline. Favorite party. It's a tie. First, our perfect- bound launch party at The Joule — a huge bash celebrating the relaunch of PaperCity from broadsheet to perfect bound. I was so proud of the monumental effort it took from our entire team (editorial and advertising) to transition the book into a new era — and it didn't hurt that the night ended with models serving late-night pizza straight from the box. Second favorite would undoubtedly be PaperCity's 20th Anniversary party held at the Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek. Intended to be held outside, a last-second monsoon forced us to move the whole thing inside. Twenty years' worth of friends, partners, colleagues, and memories all in one place? Special beyond words. Favorite story. I was particularly lucky to work at the magazine during a time when creative director Michelle Aviña was producing some of the most magnificent fashion features I've ever seen. From an over-the-top takeover of the renovated Ritz in Paris to a groovy, mod shoot at a John Lautner-designed estate in Beverly Hills, her work pushed the envelope and transported us to dreamy destinations, all at once making us think about cultural issues of the day through the lens of fashion. As VP of communications my work life revolves around WoodHouse — the Dallas-based hospitality company that owns and operates Park House Dallas, T Bar M Racquet Club, and José, and has a number of projects in the pipeline, from a club, restaurant, hotel, and workplace in Miami to Park House's second location in Houston.
