PHOTOGRAPHED AT LA POSADA DEL SOL, MEXICO CITY, AND INSPIRED BY ARTIST LEONORA CARRINGTON. L a Posada del Sol, an eerie extrav- agant ruin of a Renaissance hotel in Mexico City, was abandoned in 1945 after the construction of more than 600 rooms, a casino, theater, chapel, ballrooms, galleries, tea rooms, and Turkish baths. Envisioned by the eccentric Fernando Saldana Galvan, he enlisted renowned architect Juan Sordo Madaleno to build what he envisioned as the most extravagant meeting ground ever created for artists and intellectuals. In 1945, due to mounting debts and permit issues, the hotel was shut down soon after opening and before being fully completed. La Posado was an architectural masterpiece of colonial Baroque and Art Nouveau and is considered one of the most haunted hotels in the world. We can imagine one of Leonora Car- rington's paintings in the endless corridors and luscious landscape of La Posada del Sol. Known for her autobiographical, some- what inscrutable paintings that incorporate sorcery, metamorphosis, alchemy, and the occult, the artist's work feels at peace in the vast estate.
