SEPTEMBER | PAGE 12 | 2015 BY JANE ROZELLE. PHOTOGRAPHY DALLAS FILM SOCIETY, DANIEL DRIENSKY, TRICIA SCHOON. GIDDY-UP — DALLAS GETS RED-CARPET READY BRAVO! STUDENTS LET THE SUNSHINE IN Curtains went up in the Montgomery Arts Theatre to reveal back- to-back performances by many talented students at this year's Flyinghorse — the top fund-raiser for Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. Chairs Julie Hawes and Muffin Lemak were among the packed house who marveled at the monologues, modern dance and studio jazz melodies. The grand-finale performance, a singalong to "Aquarius," led to a standing ovation as students danced up the aisle, handing out flowers to the crowd. On their feet: Bill and Heather Esping, Ed Hawes, Georgina Hartland, Brian Bolke, Faisal Halum, Sharon Young, John Lemak, Nicole Musselman, Meghan Looney, and Nasiba Hartland-Mackie. BEST OF FEST Legos, Blues Brothers and basketball legends were a few of the highlights that dazzled audiences at the ninth annual Dallas International Film Festival. The 11-day extravaganza showcased 160-plus films from more than 32 countries, earning a five-star rating through the hard work of Dallas Film Society CEO and president Lee Papert, artistic director James Faust and board director Don Stokes — not to mention the star power that sparkled throughout the fest. While director John Landis ventured back to the '80s with his Q&A on the Blues Brothers, Dirk Nowitzki took us on the road to stardom alongside director Sebastian Dehnhardt in his latest documentary, Nowitzki: The Perfect Shot. Also spotted on the scene was the venerable Blythe Danner, who was promoting I'll See You in My Dreams. After quite the whirlwind of events, Tinseltown bid Dallas adieu — until next year. FRONT AND CENTER The thrilling pirouettes of an aerialist set the scene at the Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre for Dallas Theater Center's Centerstage Gala. Broadway brought its A-game, as performers Seth Rudetsky and Megan Hilty headlined this year's fund-raiser, which was without a doubt, a smash. (Any Smash friends out there?) Chair Yvette Ostolaza, underwriting chair Kersten Rettig and honorary chair Jeanne Marie Clossey were also worthy of a bow for the evening's success. The evening went from one magical moment to another, from acrobatics to rock- star performances. Singing along: Kevin Moriarty, Cecilia and Garrett Boone, Janie and Paul Cooke, Deborah McMurray, Nancy Rachael, Rebecca and Barron Fletcher, Ken Hersh, Glen Davison, and Diane and Hal Brierley.
