Chairs Dixey Arterburn and Ginger Sager presented a day full of sales, exquisite fare and fashion at Brook Hollow Golf Club. Emcee Shelly Slater entertained the packed house, and the show marched on as models took their turns down the runway, showcasing fall trends from local retailers. CHATTING WITH ROBIN HOOD "After seeing the film Giant, I knew the kind of man I wanted to grow up to be," said the charming (and handsome) Kevin Costner to a sold-out crowd of 1,600 at New Friends New Life's annual Wings Luncheon at the Hyatt Regency. In a tête-à-tête between Costner and Gary Cogill, the star shared how films affect us as people, then emphasized the importance of family values as well as the significance of organizations such as NFNL. The luncheon — the nonprofit's largest fund-raiser to date, raising $1.1 million — also announced the launch of a men's advocacy group to create a greater awareness of human trafficking. FILLED WITH DREAMS Former First Lady Laura Bush was the featured speaker at this year's Dream Big Luncheon for Friends of Wednesday's Child, a cause near and dear to her heart. The nonprofit is celebrating 31 years of helping children in the foster care system through education, urging them to dream big in order to achieve success in school and life. Chair Cachet Petty Weinberg and honorary chairs Amanda and G. Brint Ryan were among the crowd at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, where Bush revealed that currently in Texas, only 41 percent of children in foster care receive their high school diploma. (Ready, set, collect!) The Fair storms into town after its presentation of the inaugural Seattle Art Fair, where Vulcan, the company headed by Mr. Paul G. Allen selected — from among of all entities in the world — Art Market Productions to partner with Vulcan for the fair's eagerly watched maiden voyage at CenturyLink Field Event Center. (Mr. Allen's Seahawks play in the nearby stadium.) Sales (dealers from Paul Kasmin to James Cohan and David Zwirner reported keen interest and brisk acquisitions) and attendance (15,000 visitors) were both off the charts, paving the way for Art Market's return to Texas and its presentation of the fifth iteration of the Texas Contemporary. Brown Convention Center.) Extraordinary art adventures associated with the Fair include insider tours of The Menil Collection, which are usually reserved for the likes of Tom Ford, Beyoncé or Tilda Swinton; behind- the-scenes peeks at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston's Rothko retrospective; brunch at the famed Rothko Chapel; and private tours of Houston's acclaimed collections, including those that focus on the Latin American avant-garde. Out-of- town guests will flock to the official hotel: the magnificently restored Samuel F. Carter skyscraper, now the grand JW Marriott Downtown. It's HQ for the Mexico City contingent, too, and we predict the lush spa and art party action will be alluring draws for the collector crowd.
