Caroline Gallay JENNY ANTILL Julie O'Neal KIM COFFMAN Everyone loves a self-made success story, and jewelry designer Kendra Scott definitely qualifies. She started her company out of her home with $500; now it's a thriving online business with boutiques in Austin, Dallas and Beverly Hills. Next, Scott takes on Houston with two locations: Rice Village (her largest shop yet, at 2,100 square feet) and CityCentre (1,700 square feet). The light-blue walls and metallic embellishments reflect Scott's personal aesthetic. "I love the mix of chic, contemporary pieces with warm, vintage and natural accents, so you'll find everything from Lucite chairs and chandeliers to succulent plants and rustic wooden floors," she says. Bold statement pieces with colorful stones are Scott's signature. The jewelry, which coordinates with current fashion trends, has strong followings both in Texas and in Hollywood. We can't wait to get our hands on the Kendra Scott Color Bar, where customers match stones with metal settings to create custom pieces via touch-screen displays and iPads. New York Transplant Julie O'Neal partnered with Linda Cunningham to reconceive the space as a minimal, gallery-style showcase for a handpicked selection of contemporary European and American designers. O'Neal — who has a degree from Parsons School of Design and has worked for Christian Dior in New York — got to know Cunningham when she was a customer at her Edloe store, and Cunningham recruited her to revamp and restock her River Oaks boutique location. O'Neal designed the striking minimalist interior of the 3,000-square-foot space, with two-tone gray walls, suspended clothing racks and lighting recessed into multilevel, flat ceiling panels. She plans to offer customers personal shopping and styling services, and will also use the gallerylike space to host meetings and charitable functions. Cunningham & Co. now stocks See by Chloe and Issa of London, as well as hometown favorites such as David Peck. Accessories abound with handbags by Rebecca Minkoff and Lauren Merkin, and jewelry by Lulu Frost and Wendy Mink. Jenny Johnson Katie Adair Barnhart and Nick Adair IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD M Adair Kitchen, 5161 San Felipe, 713.623.6100; adairkitchen.com om must be proud of her progeny. Twentysomethings Nick Adair and Katie Adair Barnhart, all grown up now, are recreating the food of their childhood at this Tanglewood spot — the sort of hearty comforting fare (pimento cheese sandwiches, pecan-crusted chicken, green enchiladas and turkey meatloaf) they remember mom making. Of course, dad (Skeeter's Hamburgers founder and Los Tios owner Gary Adair) had a bit of influence on his little ones, too. The latest venture is all in the family. Casual and easy, the menus at Adair Kitchen are written on large chalkboards hung overhead. At breakfast and lunch, diners order at the counter, while dinner switches to table service, with entrées ranging from $10 to $20. The bright, airy two-story dining room provides peeks into the sea-green kitchen via glass panels. Sit under the breeze of the 12-foot ceiling fan or in a booth beneath the silhouette of an enormous pig crafted from black sheet metal. (Momma Adair apparently quite fancies pigs.) Early-risers, take note: The salty and sweet granola parfait ($5), huevos rancheros ($7.50) and house bacon-batter waffles ($6) on the breakfast menu will rouse even the most bleary-eyed among us.
