KEN HOGE, GARY FOUNTAIN St. Luke's Celebrates a Heart of Gold Honorees James Willerson Denton Cooley T he Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital celebrated its 50th anniversary with a black-tie gala, "A Golden History. A Shining Future." Nearly a thousand guests flocked to the Westin Galleria Houston to honor founder Dr. Denton Cooley and Dr. James Willerson, Texas Heart's president and medical director. Dr. Cooley was introduced by his son-in-law, Dr. Charles Fraser (surgeon-in-chief at Texas Children's Hospital), and former Secretary of State James Baker. Lyle Lovett made a surprise musical appearance, and the politicos turned out en force to honor the dynamic doctors: U.S. Representative Sheila Jackson Lee; Texas Senators Rodney Ellis and Tommy Williams; Texas State Representative Jim Pitts; as well as Olympian Leo Manzano, Jan Duncan, Louise Cooley, Cornelia and Meredith Long, and Nolan Ryan.
