121 with McFarlain's oversight. They commissioned Spanish-American neo-expressionist Domingo Zapata — a friend of the husband — to create a large-scale Guernica-inspired work. As for the lone piece that escaped certain ruin because it was traveling in a museum exhibition? Painted by notable Chinese-American artist Hung Liu, it hangs prominently over the staircase — the sole vestige of their former home. McFarlain's quiet elegance and the couple's requirement for bold hues were a surprising but perfect combination. "Brant has an in- credibly sophisticated style," the husband says, "yet there's still the quirkiness and color we wanted." Working with McFarlain to re- store their sense of place, he adds, helped heal emotional wounds caused by the fire. "Brant is the one who got us over all the craziness."
