OBSESSIONS. DECORATION. SALIENT FACTS. 20 T h e I c e m a n C o m e t h + S c u l p t u r e Nation: The W a s h i n g t o n Avenue Arts District unveiled a new quartet of talents, who take over Art Alley, the new al fresco space adjoining The Silos at Sawyer Yards. Experience site-specific creations by Trey Duvall, Bradly Brown, Syd Moen, and Erik Hagen, in conjunction with Sculpture Month Houston; Hagen emits an environmental statement with his months- in-the-making ice installation (through October 2018) … Pop next door to the Silos' "Tensile Strength" at SITE Gallery. The agrarian ruin, a creepy/cool maze of concrete honeycombs, transforms into an exhibition venue for nearly 20 talents, curated by Volker Eisele for Sculpture Month (through December 2) … Front Gallery stages the solo debut for Paul Carola, an emerging Houston artist whose practice merges Calder-esque sculpture with flat abstract painting (November 18– December 23). Taking It to the Streets: A Trifecta of urban happenings makes for an immersive downtown encounter edged with street art. For the first time, three events align. Note the new date for the free HUE Mural Festival, which now coincides with the ticketed Via Colori, where 200-plus artists create ephemeral chalk masterpieces. Via Colori marks its 12th year and raises funds for the worthy Center for Hearing and Speech. Adding to the guerrilla collaboration, the 25th annual ArtCrawl fans out from a phalanx of warehouses bordering northern downtown. It all takes place Saturday and Sunday, November 18 and 19 (ArtCrawl November 18 only; HUE continues through November 25); deets, artcrawlhouston.com, houstonviacolori. com, huemuralfestival.com. Drawing Fever: At Lawndale Art Center, art historian Susie Kalil (of the recent Dorothy Hood museum retrospective and volume) curates a view of the end of life as observed from hospital rooms at the ART NOTES Texas Medical Center. Lynn Randolph's drawings, made from direct observation as an artist in residence at MD Anderson, are not clinical or tragic, however; they're imbued with humanity and a sense of Surrealism (through January 21). Fashion, Film + Hip-Hop: At Deborah Colton Gallery, Angelbert Metoyer's 30-year retrospective spans from his days as a teen prodigy at Project Row Houses to his latest film, Play for the Sun, alongside fashion and music collaborations (November 16 – January 13). Catherine D. Anspon A s many of Define Body & Mind's devotees know, the brand is not just about fitness classes — it's all about a holistic lifestyle. Founder Henry Richardson and co-owner Erin O'Leary Stewart are obsessed with staying ahead of the curve when it comes to wellness in body, mind, and spirit. Stewart, a former professional dancer with a culinary degree from Natural Gourmet Institute for Health and Culinary Arts, created the Define Foods program several years ago to provide better-tasting nourishing foods and redefine healthy eating. Stewart has now opened Define Foods Tea + Elixir Bar inside the new Define Living space in Montrose, which is equal parts meditation studio and happy hip-zen retail and community space. The tea bar was an obvious extension of Define Living, Stewart says. "Tea slows you down. Part of the process of being mindful and practicing self-care is allowing yourself to sit down and take a moment out of the day instead of rushing from class to the next thing." Stewart is realistic, however; Wi-fi is available so you can work during your tea or coffee (yes, they have healthful options) break, and all beverages are available to go, as are the salads, muffins, and juices. Stewart took the centuries-old tea concept and added a cool factor. Adapotegenic elixirs are a unique class of botanicals that help the body adapt to changing situations and stressors (balance hormones, boost immunity, cope with stress, enhance mood, etc.). Reishi, for example, is a healing mushroom used for longevity that supports immune resilience, stress relief, and mental Clarity. Activated milks, made daily, are all plant-based. Nuts or seeds are soaked overnight and get to a sprouting point where the enzymes are alive (activated) and easy to digest. Superfood lattes are shining stars of the menu — the charcoal latte (yes, it's charcoal gray in color) is made with activated milk and coconut-base charcoal, which is detoxifying and anti-inflammatory, TEA and COFFEE REDEFINED imparting a sense of vigor without caffeine.
