her feet every time she came in the house." John Blackmon, architect for the interiors of Inman Gallery on Main Street, and the Bermac Arts renovation, was tapped to make the space a house for art. There were five requirements. "First we needed space for large works," Inman says. "An issue for many older homes is lack of wall space, so we decided to leave two of the windows covered up [they had all been covered when it was a gallery]. You can't tell from the outside, but in the inside, we have nice big walls for big paintings. Second, we needed a really good entertaining kitchen, and John came up with our gorgeous 12-foot-long island, which serves as an awesome buffet table for large gatherings. Third, we wanted as much privacy as possible — so, even though we have neighbors really close on both sides, we feel very private because of the way John configured the space. Most windows look out to the gardens or the trees. Finally, we wanted a music room/studio/ office for Denby. It's on the first floor of the back building with a guest apartment above." Green space was also important, and Inman worked with Blackmon on the landscape design. The project, completed in 2004, coincided with the move to Isabella Court, ushering in a new chapter for Inman both domestically and professionally. On the day of our photography shoot, Inman and Auble offered coffee to our crew from one of the home's command posts, the sleek countertop that punctuates the kitchen and the open-concept din- ing room. The clean, light-washed space provides a vista onto the gar- den, which adds an al fresco room to the home. On the south side, a cozy living room is warmed by a pair of mid-century sofas in bur- nished red leather and brims with avant-garde painting and photog- raphy, assiduously assembled by Inman and Auble from their two decades as a couple. While they don't always agree on collecting — "Denby is attracted to photog- raphy; he says I like 'bizarre' works on paper, but we both love painting and small sculpture" — the pair often reaches a détente.
