SETH VAUGHAN EARMARKS ANECDOTES FROM A SEASON OF BOOK BASHES. PHOTOGRAPHY CHRIS BROWN, FULTON DAVENPORT, PRISCILLA DICKSON, ANNA SCHUSTER. Swell Shelter Scribes Invade Houston Mario Buatta, Tom Scheerer and Ellie Cullman and Tracey Pruzan delight with a multitude of signing soirées. D etails define our lives, no doubt about it. That's why designer Ellie Cullman of New York interior design firm Cullman & Kravis exhaustively explores the subject in the book she co-penned with Tracey Pruzan, The Detailed Interior: Decorating Up Close with Cullman & Kravis (The Monacelli Press). Once again, home haven Found played host for an intimate and relaxed evening, this time hosted by partner Ruth Davis, with husband Neill at her side. Guests enjoyed plenty of face time with the exacting designer, whose firm was recently renamed to Architectural Digest's AD100 list. Detail-oriented: Ryan Reitmeyer, Sue Pruden, Cathy Harrison, Beth and Andy Bittson, Peppi Lausen, Mimi Wadsworth, Jenny Johnson, Jennifer Frazier, Valerie Greiner, Paige and Smoot Hull, Laura Roach, and Peggy and Greg Stirman. B ahamian bonhomie abounded when decorator Tom Scheerer came to town to sign copies of his book Tom Scheerer Decorates (Vendome Press). His first stop was West Alabama home shop Found, where he held court, signing and chatting. Found partner Aaron Rambo oversaw the cocktail fête (his counterpart Ruth Davis was off gallivanting in Paris, quelle joie!). Taken with the Nehru-wearing scribe: Catherine Lippincott, DeWayne Formby, Christina Stith, Alice Johnson, David Brown, Micah Spaniel, Kate Dorn, Frank Harrington, Bob Luna, Susanna Moldawer, Barbara Hill, Aaron Laine, and Tria Giovan. Days later, Scheerer spoke at Canopy restaurant in conjunction with the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art. Walking attendees through his process and many island projects, Scheerer stressed the importance of refining one's palette. Enjoying Scheerer's Lyford ode: Julie Koch, Greg Schneck, Cindy and Larry Burns, Bill Curtis, Mindy Carter, Russell Windham, Lucia Benton, Cedar Baldridge, and Chelsea Cunningham. B e afraid … be very afraid. I know I was when I found myself in the front row at Decorative Center Houston's Fall Market for an appearance by Mario Buatta, who had come from New York to speak and sign copies of his new book, Mario Buatta: Fifty Years of American Interior Decoration (Rizzoli). No one was safe, as the designer took pleasure in fiddling with the audience after a three-minute introductory routine for which he donned a toupee so horrible it was almost good. I knew the way to the cantankerous chap's heart, though, and relished the chance to hide a plastic cockroach in my copy of his book. (Buatta, you see, is a notorious prankster who often plops his famed imitation roach on the finest restaurant tables the world over, in hopes of giving tablemates a fright.) When he opened my book, his discovery elicited a yelp and jolt, which was a sufficient touché for me. Happily heckled: Beverly Jacomini, Kathy Masterson, Catheryn Wilson, Elyse Lanier, Ben Johnston, Leo Jaimes and Scott Boyd, Leslie Carothers, Lindsey Herod, Susan Menke and Sarah Eilers. Months later, Buatta returned for an evening at Tootsies. The prince of chintz welcomed design devotees for Ketel One cocktails and an intimate signing, for which he used a handy rubber human hand as a blotter. Need I say more? Buatta fans: Katherine and Bill Phelps, Wayne Smith and Denny Lyons, Dolores and Stuart Phelps, Erica and Benjy Levit, Robert Sakowitz, Peter Vitale, Harry Greiner, Mark Horn, and Nina Delano.
