Photography Jenny Antill Clifton, Wilson Parish. A rchitect demigod John Staub reversed the front and rear elevations of many Houston estates, crafting private intricately landscaped lawns against the backdrop of a grand house ideal for alfresco entertaining. The backside of Bayou Bend is perhaps the grandest of them all. During its con- struction in the 1920s, Miss Ima Hogg instructed Staub to keep as many trees as possible — remarkably, only one was removed to make way for the house — and the eight gardens were designed around the pattern of the trees. When she donated the house to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, she must have envisioned the fabulous fund-raising events that would take place en plein air. Two such events held on the spectacular grounds raised well over six figures for the coffers of the operating budget of Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens: The annual Garden Party and the inaugu- ral fashion show and luncheon from Galleria newcomer The Webster.
