R othschild. The name alone conjures a fantasy world of opulence and the most refined taste. After a world tour (including stops in Hong Kong and London earlier this year) to preview the glittering and historic decorative and fine art in the "Rothschild Masterpieces" sale, the gavel at Christies will drop on lot after lot — for what we anticipate are record-breaking amounts. It's the first-ever North American sale of objects belonging to a renowned family that collected for centuries, with a live auction at Rockefeller Center in New York City launching with a night sale on Wednesday, October 11, followed by two day-sales Thursday and Friday, October 12 and 13, as well as a concurrent online sale, October 3 through 17. Christies has brought together 600 lots including French furniture, maiolica, enamels, Renaissance jewels, silver, and Old Master paintings. "The objects we are bringing to sale have been treasured by generations of the family and demonstrate the very essence of the term 'goût Rothschild.'" — Jonathan Rendell, deputy chairman Christie's Americas Going Once, Going Twice The lots, estimated to sell in excess of $20 million, were collected by two generations of the family during the latter half of the 19th century. Many of these masterpieces were housed in the palatial Château de Ferrières outside Paris (which opened in 1862 with a gala attended by Napoleon III). Given their long history of philanthropy, the family bequeathed the estate to France in 1975, and it is now owned by the town of Ferrières. Over the past 100 years, the Rothschilds have entrusted the venerable auction house with previous sales. The final tally for one held in London in July 2019 — "Masterpieces from a Rothschild Collection" — was 280 percent above the low estimate.
