Our modern Mannerist, John Currin, is doubly celebrated this summer: in the Gagosian booth at Art Basel, Switzerland, and ensconced in a traveling pantheon of a show devoted to the nude and organized by the Tate, that recently touched down at Japan's Yokohama Museum of Art. He's the prognosticator of portraying the odd and the off-kilter, all the while pulling the curtain back to expose a new form of beauty. Swanlike necks evoke gazelle grace, limbs languorously fall at the side, and a saucy nymphet attitude is both naïve and anything but innocent. Currin's femmes are a mirror of our precarious news cycle — one where provocative beauty and #MeToo, political turmoil and the consciousness of the millennial generation co-exist in confusion. 38
