A t the annual Heroes & Handbags silent auction and luncheon at River Oaks Country Club, the race was on to bid high and bid often on 150 coveted designer bags. Popular blogger and luncheon chair Caroline Harper Knapp led the charge, collecting gently used and never-opened clutches, totes, cross-bodies, including bags from Chanel, Saint Laurent, and Louis Vuitton. Donae Chramosta, aka The Vintage Contessa — known for her Louis Vuitton collection — was the honoree. Proceeds helped Heroes for Children, provide financial and social assistance to families of children with cancer. That's the impression left by the fifth annual UNICEF Gala Houston, where a glittering covey raised more than $900,000. An international quartet of chair couples set the stage at The Post Oak Hotel: Leticia and Steve Trauber, Sippi and Ajay Khurana, Brigitte and Bashar Kalai, and Ileana and Michael Treviño. UNICEF presented the Margaret Alkek Williams Humanitarian Award to Susan and Fayez Sarofim and the Global Community Hero Award to Linda and Jim McIngvale. Emma Kathleen Hepburn Ferrer represented the late Audrey Hepburn's family. Also delivering wattage to the proceedings were honorary chairs Rose and Harry Cullen, Leela and Nat Krishnamurthy, Penny and Paul Loyd, Margaret Alkek Williams, and Randa and Charles Williams; UNICEF regional director Nelson Bowman and regional board chair Susan Boggio; Buzz Aldrin; and presenting sponsors Tony Bradfield and Kevin Black of Tenenbaum Jewelers.
