Salvaged columns and cornices were marbleized by Werner-Vaughn, giving the room the air of Venetian decay. John and Dominique de Menil September 2004 Photographer Tria Giovan Architecture Philip Johnson Renovation Stern and Bucek Architects Interior Design Charles James Founders of the Menil Collection, John and Dominique de Menil, completed their International-style house — designed by Philip Johnson, with extraordinary interiors by couturier Charles James — in 1961. The house now belongs to The Menil Collection and retains its glorious furnishings and full complement of art. In Dominique de Menil's dressing room, Charles James applied a brushed-paint treatment to the wardrobe doors in an array of grayed pastels that has survived decades without repainting. The famous drinks closet has its original yellow felt door and harbors taxidermied birds and a collection of miniature works from artists ranging from Marc Chagall to Jean Hugo.
